The Biggest Illusion in Chess
The biggest scam in modern chess coaching is making students believe that memorizing opening moves is the same as learning chess.
It's not.
A student who can recite twenty moves from memory is not necessarily a stronger player. He is simply a better memorizer.
Memory is not chess. Thinking is chess.
Parents Are Easily Misled
Parents who don't know chess often judge coaching by one thing:
"How many openings has my child learned?"
That's the wrong question.
A child who understands chess but knows only basic opening principles will eventually become far stronger than a child who has memorized hundreds of opening lines without understanding the game.
Chess strength comes from understanding, not repetition.
The Real Test Begins When Theory Ends
The moment the opponent plays an unexpected move...
The memorized player freezes.
Why?
Because the book has ended.
Now the player has to think for himself.
And that is exactly what opening memorization fails to teach.
The board doesn't care what you've memorized. It rewards what you understand.
Opening Traps Create Weak Players
Many players don't want to outplay their opponents.
They want to out-memorize them.
They hope their opponent falls into a trap instead of learning how to create winning positions through better calculation and understanding.
Winning because your opponent didn't know a line is not the same as becoming a stronger player.

How I Teach Chess
I don't teach students to memorize moves.
I teach them to understand positions.
I want my students to be comfortable even when the game leaves theory on move three.
Because every chess game eventually becomes an original game.
Understanding survives. Memorization expires.
Final Thought
The goal of chess is not to remember what someone else played.
The goal of chess is to find the best move yourself.
