Chess Is Not an Exam


One of the biggest mistakes I see in chess is treating tournament preparation like exam preparation.

A tournament is coming, so the player starts training seriously two weeks before.

That approach doesn't work in chess.

You cannot study the night before, prepare for a couple of weeks and expect to suddenly become a championship-level player.

Chess Strength Takes Time

For a serious National-level target, I would consider at least 6 months of full-time training necessary.

For a serious State-level title, at least 3 months of full-time training is a realistic minimum.

And this is apart from years of playing experience.

Because chess strength is not just about knowing things.

Calculation, tactics, strategy, positional understanding, endgames, pattern recognition and practical decision-making have to be developed through continuous training and playing.

You Cannot Cram Chess

You can memorize an opening in a day.

You can solve hundreds of puzzles in a week.

You can watch dozens of master games.

But that doesn't mean you have developed the corresponding chess skills.

Information can be collected quickly.
Chess strength cannot.

Strength comes from repeatedly doing the work, making mistakes, analyzing them and improving.

Why Intensive Camps Matter

This is where intensive training camps have an important role.

A good camp creates concentrated training time where a player can study master games, calculate, play serious training games, analyze those games and work on different areas of chess without the distractions of normal routine.

But one camp alone doesn't create a champion.

Camps become powerful when they are part of a long-term training process.

One camp gives training.

Repeated camps over several months create continuity.

And continuity creates improvement.

The Final Weeks Are for Sharpening

The final one or two weeks before a major tournament are important—but they should be used to sharpen an already-developed player.

Opening revision.

Training games.

Game analysis.

Calculation.

Endgame revision.

Tournament simulation.

Mental preparation.

The foundation should already be there.

The Real Difference

Years build experience.
Months build strength.
Weeks sharpen performance.

Chess is not an exam where you can study at the last minute and hope for a good result.

You cannot cram chess.
You have to build the player.

What Should a Chess Training Camp Actually Teach?


A chess training camp should be more than a few days of lessons, tactics, and games.

The real purpose of a camp is to develop the thinking abilities that make a player stronger.

A student doesn't become a better chess player simply by learning more openings. They improve when they learn how to recognize positions, calculate variations, understand plans, make decisions, and perform under pressure.

A complete chess training system should therefore develop five essential skills.

The Five Core Chess Skills

1. Pattern Recognition

Chess is a game of patterns.

Strong players don't calculate every position from the beginning. Their experience allows them to recognize familiar tactical motifs, pawn structures, attacking formations, piece placements, strategic ideas, and typical positions.

This is why studying Master Games is so valuable.

When students repeatedly observe how strong players handle positions, they gradually build an internal library of chess patterns.

The goal is not to memorize games.

The goal is to develop chess vision.


2. Calculation

Pattern recognition helps a player identify possibilities, but calculation determines whether those possibilities actually work.

A player needs to calculate:

  • Candidate moves
  • Forcing moves
  • Tactical combinations
  • Variations
  • Opponent's responses
  • Consequences of exchanges

That simple habit can eliminate a huge number of unnecessary mistakes.

Chess is ultimately a decision-making game.

A player can know hundreds of tactical patterns and still make poor moves because they don't know which idea to choose in the actual position.

Training games are therefore extremely important.

Students should not only play games. They should analyze their decisions afterward.

Questions such as:

  • What were my candidate moves?
  • What did I think during the game?
  • What did I miss?
  • Why did I choose this move?
  • Was my evaluation correct?
  • What should I have considered?

turn a game into a learning experience.

The objective is to develop independent thinking rather than dependence on a coach.


4. Positional Understanding

Not every chess position contains a tactic.

Many games are decided by small advantages accumulated over time.

Students therefore need to understand:

  • Pawn structures
  • Piece activity
  • Space
  • Weaknesses
  • Piece coordination
  • Open files and diagonals
  • Exchanges
  • Plans
  • Endgames
  • Opening principles

Strategy, endgame training, opening understanding, and Master Games all contribute to this skill.

The important distinction is between memorizing what to play and understanding why to play it.

A player who understands the position can find good moves even when the position is unfamiliar.

Chess is also a test of the mind.

A player must remain focused after making a mistake, stay patient in difficult positions, manage time, handle pressure, and continue fighting when the position becomes unpleasant.

This is why practical tournament experience is essential.

Students need opportunities to experience:

Winning. Losing. Mistakes. Pressure. Recovery. Concentration.

Psychological strength cannot be developed completely from a classroom.

It must be experienced on the board.

The Role of the Coach

The coach's job is not simply to provide answers.

A strong coach should create situations in which students are forced to think for themselves.

Instead of immediately saying:

"This is the correct move."

the coach can ask:

"What would you play here?"

Then:

"Why?"

And finally:

"What happens after your opponent's best response?"

This develops the student's own thinking process.

The long-term objective is not to make the student dependent on the coach.

It is to make the student capable of sitting alone at a chessboard and thinking independently.


The Goal: A Complete Chess Player

The five skills work together.

Pattern Recognition helps the player see possibilities.

Calculation determines whether those possibilities work.

Positional Understanding explains what the position requires.

Decision Making chooses the best practical action.

Psychological Strength allows the player to execute that decision under pressure.

None of these skills should be developed in isolation.

A player with excellent calculation but poor decision making will still struggle.

A player with strong positional knowledge but weak calculation will miss tactics.

A player with good chess knowledge but poor psychological control may fail to perform in tournaments.

They Don't Know That They Don't Know


One of the most common problems in chess training is not a lack of effort.

It is that students don't know that they don't know.

After a training game, many students analyze confidently. They explain their ideas, evaluate positions, and justify their moves. The confidence sounds convincing.

The problem is that the analysis is often wrong.

They miss tactical threats.

They misunderstand strategic ideas.

They fail to see weaknesses.

They overestimate their position.

Yet they believe they understand what happened.

This is a dangerous stage in learning because a student who knows he doesn't understand will ask questions. A student who doesn't know that he doesn't understand will stop looking for answers.

The gap between strong players and weaker players is often not intelligence. It is awareness.

Strong players constantly suspect their own evaluations.

They ask:

  • What am I missing?
  • Why does the engine disagree?
  • What did my opponent see that I didn't?
  • Is there a better plan?

Weak players often ask:

  • Why didn't my move work?

The first group searches for truth.

The second group searches for confirmation.

Every chess player starts by making mistakes. That is normal.

The real danger begins when mistakes are hidden behind confidence.

Improvement starts the moment a student realizes:

"Perhaps I am missing something important."

A Manifesto Against Weak Chess Coaching

Most chess coaching today is built on the wrong priorities.

It looks structured. It looks professional.
But it does not produce strong players.

Let’s be clear about that.


The Core Problem

Coaches are focusing on what is easy to teach, not what actually builds strength.

  • Opening files are handed out like scripts
  • Tactics are drilled endlessly
  • Students stay busy, but not sharp

This is not training.
This is distraction with structure.


Opening Obsession

Memorizing opening lines is not mastery.

It is dependency.

For a few moves, the student feels in control.
The moment the position deviates, that control disappears.

Because there was no understanding behind the moves.

A player who depends on memory will always collapse when memory fails.


Tactics Overuse

Tactics matter. But uncontrolled tactics training creates unstable players.

  • They search for combinations in dead positions
  • They calculate without direction
  • They play fast instead of playing right

This produces inconsistency.

Not strength.


What Strong Players Actually Have

Real players are built differently.

They don’t rely on recall.
They rely on clarity.

They understand:

  • What the position demands
  • Which plan fits
  • When to calculate and when to improve

That doesn’t come from opening files or random puzzles.

That comes from deep exposure to real chess.

The foundation is simple, but most coaches avoid it because it is harder to teach.

  • Studying complete games
  • Understanding ideas from players like to
  • Calculating with discipline, not speed
  • Playing and analyzing without excuses

This builds thinking.

And thinking is everything.

When the base is weak, the pattern is predictable:

  • Fast early improvement
  • Long stagnation
  • Drop in confidence

Students don’t lack talent.

They were trained incorrectly.

No shortcuts.
